CNC machining of silicon nitride ceramics for industry

We provide professional CNC machining services for silicon nitride ceramics (Si3N4), delivering stable and controllable manufacturing of precision ceramic parts for high-temperature, high-strength, wear-resistant, and corrosion-resistant applications.

Description

Silicon nitride offers excellent mechanical properties and thermal shock stability, but its brittleness and high hardness impose greater demands on machining processes. By combining specialized machines, diamond tooling, and advanced techniques, we can meet the delivery requirements for ceramic parts with complex geometries and high precision.

Equipment and process capabilities:

  1. Machines and tooling: We are equipped with rigid CNC grinding machines, CNC milling coupled with ultrasonic vibration / cooling assistance systems, and diamond grinding wheels and diamond tools, suitable for precision material removal of hard and brittle materials.
  2. Machining methods: We support diamond grinding, ultrasonic-assisted machining (USM), precision milling, wire cutting as an alternative process, precision EDM forming (for conductive-coating assisted processes), and subsequent fine polishing and chemical mechanical polishing (CMP).
  3. Post-processing: We provide post-sintering heat treatments, hot isostatic pressing (HIP) options, precision grinding, lapping and polishing, and surface sealing/coating treatments to improve density, surface quality, and service life.

CNC machining of silicon nitride ceramics, materials and application scenarios:

  1. Applicable materials: Silicon nitride (Si3N4) and its composite ceramics.
  2. Typical applications: High-temperature bearings, mechanical seals, turbine and hot-end components, wear-resistant parts, combustion chamber components, semiconductor manufacturing fixtures, and precision machinery and instrument parts — all scenarios requiring heat resistance, wear resistance, and high fatigue life.

Design recommendations and manufacturing considerations:

  1. Brittleness considerations: Silicon nitride is a hard and brittle material; designs should avoid excessively thin walls, apply fillets to sharp corners, and reduce stress concentrations to lower fracture risk.
  2. Manufacturability optimization: We recommend performing DFM evaluations during the design phase, arranging wall thicknesses reasonably, increasing transition fillets, limiting the depth of extremely fine deep holes or replacing them with assembly structures to reduce machining difficulty and cost.
  3. Tooling and fixturing: Use dedicated diamond tooling and robust fixturing, set appropriate feed and cutting parameters, and apply suitable cooling/lubrication strategies to prevent surface cracking and chipping.

Quality control and inspection:

  1. Inspection equipment: We are equipped with optical measurement, surface profilometers, coordinate measuring machines (selected according to part characteristics), microscopes for visual inspection, and CT nondestructive testing when necessary, to detect dimensional, surface, and internal defects.
  2. Documentation and traceability: We provide first article inspection (FAI) reports, batch records, and necessary physical/material certification documents to support customers’ quality system integration and validation needs.
